Collection Steward - Woburn Abbey
Woburn Abbey, the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, is currently closed to the public to facilitate the largest and most significant refurbishment and conservation programme in over 70 years. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the curatorial team at this historic time.
You will provide technical assistance to the team and carry out object handling and collections moves, packing for transport or storage as well as creating new displays of works of art as directed. During our closure there are a number of loan exhibitions ongoing to UK museums, and you will support the delivery of these exhibition projects, including exhibition courier duties. In order to maintain the collections in storage and on display, you will undertake preventative conservation and documentation projects and lead on environmental monitoring and integrated pest management. In addition the role involves day-to-day housekeeping duties and annual deep-cleaning as part of our preventative conservation and housekeeping standards. As we work towards relaunching the Abbey visitor attraction in 2025 you will be a key-player in realising the installation of the major redisplay of the collections over 25 rooms open to the public.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience of working in a historic house or museum environment, with a flexible approach and good understanding of preventative conservation, ensuring excellent standards of housekeeping and collections care. The ability to undertake manual handling and work from heights is essential to this role.
